A Butterfly Bedroom Set & Introducing Frou-gal

I’m excited to tell you about a new furniture website that has started here in Australia with lots of inspiration for furniture lovers all over the world, but first … let me show you this set of drawers and their new look:

(use the bar in the centre of the picture to swipe back and forth to see before/after)

I picked up this bedroom drawer set from our local Lifeline store and they were in great condition, but a little chipped in places and a couple of handles missing pieces. (see “before” swipe above)

Prepping is an important step!

No matter what type of paint you use, prepping your furniture is still an important step, especially if you want a smooth finish. I gave the existing varnish a bit of a scuff with some 120 grit sandpaper. I wanted to go for a clean finish with no distressing, so sanding gives the paint a better chance at allowing the paint to adhere well.Butterfly dresser set-8527I used Fusion Mineral Paint in Renfrew Blue for the basic colour on the side drawersButterfly dresser set-8528

Painted perfection:

I used a synthetic brush (these will be available on the website soon) and as you can see, when you first apply the paint, the brush strokes are visible. Fusion is a self levelling paint, so these strokes disappear pretty well as the paint dries – super fast drying by the way!

Stencilling:

I then used one of the Fusion white colours – Lamp White, mixed with a little Pearl tint, to add the beautiful butterfly stencil.Butterfly dresser set-8552 It’s a large stencil and is available HERE on our website.

And … we’re done:

I used Casement white on the larger set of drawers with the contrasting butterflies in Renfrew Blue:Butterfly dresser set-0235 Butterfly dresser set-0242This set is for sale, see the end of this post to find out more …Butterfly dresser set-0243 Butterfly dresser set-0244 Butterfly dresser set-0245 Butterfly dresser set-0246 Butterfly dresser set-0247I took the original handles, cleaned them up a bit, then dry brushed on some copper gilding paste (Fusion product).Butterfly dresser set-0248

Now some great news:

I said at the start of this post I wanted to tell you about a new Aussie website for furniture inspiration.

frougal.com.au is an exclusive online boutique filled with beautiful, unique, vintage furniture pieces.”

Frou-gal also states: “Listings on frougal.com.au are by invitation only. Sellers (craftspeople/artists) are carefully selected based on their experience, skill and the quality of their pieces.”

I feel honoured to be a part of the Frou-gal community of furniture up-cyclers, sharing my love of re-creating special pieces and making them available for sale in this way.

Screen Shot 2015-07-24 at 11.33.09 pmThe site is very user friendly, and if you are looking to purchase a unique piece of furniture, you can view items state by state using the “Buy Local” button.

You’ll also find lots of adorable pictures on their Instagram @frou_gal where they post regular updates of more beautiful pieces available for sale.

Enjoy browsing and we’d love you to share and tell your friends about Frou-gal too. Even if you live outside of Australia, you’ll love the designs and inspiration for your own up-cycling ideas.

Have a great week all!

Sharon.

The drawers look gorgeous, Sharon! I love the idea of ‘reversing’ the colour uses. It works brilliantly. It all looks really sweet.

Looks great Sharon. With the fusion paint is that sheen on the finish as a result of the paint or is there a wax finish too? Looks great – especially if it doesn’t need a wax coat!

Thanks, Joy. Yes, the sheen is just the paint. It is a matte finish, but the built in top coat and self levelling of the paint, give a lovely finish. There’s always the option to add wax for more of a sheen, but not necessary.

Sharon, these are gorgeous. I thought of you the other day when I was in a local Vinnies & saw a simply stunning dressing table & mirror. It had lots of little elegant details & was crying out for your touch!
