How to Clean and Restore Old Wood – My Vintage School Classroom Find!

In this post, I’ll be showing you one way to restore old wood.
Looking through some wooden items at a second hand store, I came across this vintage meter ruler. I’m probably showing my age, but I remember the teachers used to rule lines on the blackboard with these as well as using it for measuring and teaching about measurement.
This one looked quite grotty when I found it, but I thought I’d take it home and see if I could clean it up a bit.

A lot of it was general grime which came off with a bit of soap and water using a squeezed rag. For more stubborn dirt, a very gentle scourer (the plastic kind, not steel wool).
Here’s where I tested a little bit just to see.

Wow, looking better on the right already… I had to be extra careful where the numbers were marked so they wouldn’t come off with my scrubbing.

Here it is cleaned up and allowed to dry out.

But don’t worry, I didn’t scrub all the character out of this old measuring stick!
Here’s a few scratches and a spot of old green paint …

… and if you know of a teacher called “Bobbie” – this may have been their ruler!

I used Feast Watson’s Scandinavian oil to restore it to a nice finish. Simply rub in with a lint free cloth, leave for several minutes and rub away any excess. Allow to dry.
(The same method that I would apply using Miss Mustard Seed’s Hemp Oil which we sell in our online store HERE.)

See the lovely richness of the wood now:

Well “Bobbie” … thanks for the memories.
