This was my mum’s jewellery box she’s had for decades. When they downsized house and she was offering us all and sundry, I looked for wood items (as you do) that I could transform into something Shabby and Chic!
This one caught my eye, and made a perfect birthday surprise for my 12 year old who was excited to receive something that belonged to Grandma, AND it was Shabby Chic to match her room.
So I removed all the hardware. Amazing how tiny those hinge screws are! Nearly lost a couple, but kept them in the jewellery compartments and all went well.
Added a couple of coats of chalk paint using the Plaster of Paris method. There are several DIY Chalk paint recipes on the net, but I found this one via Pinterest most useful. The lovely ladies at “In My Own Style” have done a great comparison on their page.
You get a lovely grainy texture, it sticks to anything, and is great for sanding back to a shabby finish. Below is one of the doors BEFORE sanding, then below it, AFTER sanding.
