Fabulous French Footstool Makeover

I picked up this footstool at our local dump (Recycling Centre sounds nicer). The cover was mouldy, but I risked it to see if the wood was okay underneath. I took off the cover and the foam underneath was mouldy too. Yuk!

So I was left with the base that looked like this:

I bought some batting from Spotlight and measured around the perimeter of the stool as the original had a thin layer of foam around the outside boxing too.

Then I cut fabric to go around the outside to match the lovely French panel I’d found at Spotlight. I sewed it carefully together, matching all the sides evenly.

I found an upholstery shop who sold me a piece of thick foam for the top of my stool. So I measured it up and used my electric knife to cut it.

I placed my lovely sewing on top and pulled it tightly down the sides and OH-Oh! Big mistake! When measuring my side panels, I hadn’t calculated the measurement of the foam thickness as I hadn’t bought that yet – WHAT was I thinking??

So here is my dilemma! Do I start again or just add another piece to the bottom?
I figured it went far enough to the bottom of the stool that I could get away with cutting another length to sew to the bottom, so away I went.

Turning the stool over, I stapled the middle of the four sides to begin, then continued stapling, pulling the fabric taut as I went.

I had a piece of hessian (burlap in the USA) that I measured to cover the base and stapled it, after tucking the edges under. Then screwed the feet back on to the base.

And voila! The bottom was not noticeable, so all was okay!

And here she is looking lovely in my living room…

    Hi Sharon
Thank you for visiting my blog. I love your ottoman make over, very pretty. I have the same fabric. I was going to use it for some cushion cover.
