Industrial Stools Makeover with Stencilled Numbers

I found 4 of these stools at a Recycle Centre, and I totally misplaced my “BEFORE” picture of them, but if you can picture some lovely reddish stained glossy lacquer – you get the picture.

So here is an example after all my hard work sanding back with my electric belt sander (that glossy varnish was annoying to get off)

I gave the raw seats a wipe over with turps on a rag to get rid of dust, etc.

Here’s a close up of the legs which were already painted, but sadly, looked dirty and worn in a not so nice shabby way. So I gave them a couple of coats of Antique White semi-gloss interior paint.

I used a wood pine stain for the tops of the chair stools …

… then using stencils I printed out from my computer using “Stencil” font, cut out carefully with a Stanley knife, I stencil brushed each number with a darker stain (walnut). It’s important to use the same type of stain as you used on your seat (ie. oil based stain with oil based stain, water based stain with water based stain)

Then after the stain dried, I coated twice with a satin varnish.

And here’s the “AFTER” look:

Here are the stools now in their new home waiting for children to come home from school to sit and snack and do their homework! The new owner was excited how well the colour matched the wood in the kitchen.

I love your stools. I recently did 3 stools in Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and did words on them. I didn’t think about doing numbers too.
