Layla’s Mint Study Desk Makeover

Laylas Mint Study Desk Before 1

Before: ready to sand (drawers taken out for sanding)

Driving past the Second Hand Shop, I noticed they were having a moving sale. A quick u-turn and a dash inside to look for furniture, because who knows that if you are moving a store, you don’t want to lug big items with you to the next place so I was ready to bargain.
When I saw the study desk had no price marked on it, I asked the owner how much it was, fully expecting the usual op-shop price for a desk like this around the $45+ mark. I was ready to haggle until my jaw dropped at his answer: $10!

Sanded ready for painting.

Sold! And off to I Restore Stuff it goes …

I fully sanded the top back to raw wood ready to stain. I love this VJ type panelled look on the sides of the desk and across the back.Laylas Mint Study Desk Before 9I chose Layla’s Mint (MMS Milk Paint) for the base of the desk. Here is one coat:

I love the grain in this desk top even though its just a plain pine timber. There’s something about raw wood that gets me excited to dress it up with some stain!Laylas Mint Study Desk Before 7I stained it with Curio MMSMP (1 part milk paint powder to 3 parts water) and used Hemp Oil to provide a protective surface covering.Laylas Mint Study Desk 14And here’s the finished look:Laylas Mint Study Desk 1

Wonderful color choices! I am seriously going to re-think ever painting the tops of furniture in the future. If they’re in good enough condition for staining, that will likely be my choice. It gives such a ‘richness’ to the piece. Thank you so much for sharing. I look forward to more projects. 🙂
